The concept of proximity can be interpreted both in a physical sense and in a sentimental sense. The two coincide perfectly in the best made works.
However, just to clarify on the distinction, in the first sense proximity, being near, refers to everything that is physically close to us, the surroundings of our house, the neighborhood and the faces of our daily life.
Proximity photography can be understood as a zero kilometer photography (che si intende? Di cose solo vicine? Perché a kilometre zero non vuol dire nulla. Io eliminerei proprio tutta questa frase.)
The history of proximity photography presents numerous examples of interesting works created without straying too far from one's own center of life and, especially recently, with the rediscovery of the values connected with respecting and enhancing the environment, it is about re-enhancing the local again, taking some distance from the idea that photography is necessarily connected to travel or the traveler - in everyday life. In this sense, the challenge is certainly interesting, because it involves resetting our gaze and making it new and fresh like when we were children. There is also a deleterious sentimental meaning to the idea of proximity: to remain tied to a genre that makes us feel psychologically at home, safe, while preventing experimentation and discovery, in our comfort zone.
The meeting conducted by Fabio Savagnone and Anna Fici will present some happy cases and others with less interesting results.
